Seen from the sky, Harrowdown Hill, is a small, wooded zone amidst farmlands. It is in the county of Oxfordshire, some one hundred kilometres northwest of London. Pathways lined by trees and bushes allow strollers to access the woods. For one year, equipped with a large-format camera, artist John Spinks explored every nook and cranny, visiting and revisiting the same spots, over the course of the days and changing seasons. Made of back-and-forth journeys, from image to image, the hundred photographs that comprise the book offer more than a simple sequence of landscapes. Page after page, readers insistently seek a way out of this green and leafy labyrinth. Looking up at the sky allows one to catch one’s breath before continuing the journey. Walking and memory go hand in hand.
Twenty years ago, in July 2003, the body of scientist David Kelly was discovered in Harrowdown Hill. This biological warfare expert and UN inspector had denounced the falsification of the report that led to the Second Gulf War.
David Kelly had been a frequent walker in this spot.

Vanuit de lucht gezien is Harrowdown Hill een bebost eilandje omringd door landbouwgrond. Het ligt in het graafschap Oxfordshire, ongeveer honderd kilometer ten noordwesten van Londen. Het is te bereiken via paden omzoomd met bomen en struiken. Een jaar lang verkent kunstenaar John Spinks, uitgerust met een grootformaatcamera, er paden en verborgen hoekjes van, steeds weer dezelfde plaatsen, en dat op verschillende momenten van de dag en in verschillende seizoenen. De honderd foto’s waaruit het boek bestaat, weerspiegelen het heen-en-weer gaan, van beeld naar beeld, en bieden meer dan een eenvoudige opeenvolging van landschappen. Pagina na pagina zoeken we naarstig een uitweg uit dit labyrint van groen. Omhoog naar de lucht kijken geeft de mogelijkheid om op adem te komen om je reis verder te zetten. Wandelen blijft de herinnering prikkelen.
Een twintigtal jaar geleden, in juli 2003, werd op Harrowdown Hill het levenloze lichaam van wetenschapper David Kelly ontdekt. Deze expert op het gebied van biologische oorlogsvoering, een VN-inspecteur, had de vervalsing aan de kaak gesteld van het rapport dat tot de Tweede Golfoorlog had geleid.
David Kelly liep vaak rond op deze plek.

Vu du ciel, Harrowdown Hill, est un îlot boisé au milieu de terres agricoles. Il est situé dans le comté d’Oxfordshire à une centaine de kilomètres au nord-ouest de Londres. Des sentiers bordés d’arbres et de buissons permettent d’y accéder. Pendant une année, muni d’une caméra de grand format, l’artiste John Spinks va en explorer chemins et recoins, passant et repassant aux mêmes endroits, au fil des heures de la journée et à différentes saisons. Fait d’allers en retours, d’images en images, les cent photographies qui composent le livre offrent plus qu’une simple séquence de paysages. Avec insistance, page après page, on est à la cherche d’une issue à ce labyrinthe de verdure. Regarder vers le ciel permet de reprendre son souffle afin de poursuivre son cheminement. Marcher n’en finit pas d’animer la mémoire.
Il y a une vingtaine d’années, en juillet 2003, le corps sans vie du scientifique David Kelly est découvert à Harrowdown Hill. Cet expert en guerre biologique, inspecteur de l’ONU, avait dénoncé la falsification du rapport qui conduira à la seconde guerre du Golfe.
David Kelly avait l’habitude de se promener à cet endroit.
