A 50th year anniversary. Published in 1974 by Norman Fisher in New York, TWO PIPES FOURTEEN LOCATIONS is the very first book created by Peter Downsbrough using photographs. In sixty-three images, from various perspectives, the artist documents fourteen of his TWO PIPES. Each sculpture consists of two standard steel pipes planted vertically. One has an above-ground height of five meters fifty (19'). The other has variable length. The distance between them is invariably eight centimeters (3''). Whether outdoors, in an exhibition space, or on a piece of paper, the TWO POLES and TWO LINES will accompany the TWO PIPES in this tensioning of space. The book, TWO PIPES FOURTEEN LOCATIONS, opens with a plate of captions. It provides information on the dimensions and location of the pieces. The very first photograph reproduced in the book is a close-up shot. The image is cropped. It foreshadows the photographic work that the artist Peter Downsbrough would develop over several decades.

The TWO PIPES are part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent, as well as several private collections. They have been included in numerous publications and exhibitions. Recently, the Thomas Zander Gallery organized the installation of some TWO PIPES in various locations in the city of Cologne.

Het boek TWO PIPES FOURTEEN LOCATIONS, gepubliceerd in 1974 door Norman Fisher in New York, markeert het allereerste boek gerealiseerd door Peter Downsbrough op basis van foto's, ter ere van zijn vijftigste verjaardag. Door middel van drieënzestig afbeeldingen vanuit verschillende hoeken, documenteert de kunstenaar veertien van zijn sculpturen genaamd TWO PIPES. Elke sculptuur bestaat uit twee standaard stalen buizen, waarbij één verticaal is geplaatst op een hoogte van vijf meter vijftig (19') boven de grond, terwijl de andere varieert in lengte. De afstand tussen de twee buizen blijft onveranderlijk acht centimeter (3''). Of het nu buiten is, in een kunstgalerij of op papier, de TWO POLES en TWO LINES vergezellen de TWO PIPES in het spanningsveld van de ruimte. Het boek opent met een legendaire plaat, waarin informatie wordt verstrekt over de afmetingen en locaties van de stukken. De allereerste foto gereproduceerd in het boek is een close-up, waarbij het werk fotografisch vooruitloopt op wat kunstenaar Peter Downsbrough in de komende decennia zal ontwikkelen.

De TWO PIPES maken deel uit van de collecties van het Museum of Modern Art in New York, het Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Gent, en verschillende privécollecties. Ze zijn opgenomen in talrijke publicaties en tentoonstellingen. De Thomas Zander Galerie heeft onlangs de installatie van een serie van deze buitenbeelden georganiseerd op diverse locaties in de stad Keulen.

A 50th year anniversary. Publié en 1974 par Norman Fisher à New York, TWO PIPES FOURTEEN LOCATIONS est le tout premier livre réalisé par Peter Downsbrough à partir de photographies. En soixante-trois images, aux points de vue variés, l’artiste documente quatorze de ses TWO PIPES. Chaque sculpture est composée de deux tubes standards en acier plantés verticalement. L’un est d’une hauteur hors-sol de cinq mètres cinquante (19’). L’autre est de longueur variable. Entre eux, la distance est invariablement de huit centimètres (3’’). Que cela soit à l’extérieur, dans un lieu d’exposition ou sur une feuille de papier, les TWO POLES et les TWO LINES viendront accompagner les TWO PIPES dans cette mise en tension de l’espace. Le livre, TWO PIPES FOURTEEN LOCATIONS, s’ouvre sur une planche de légendes. Elle nous renseigne sur les dimensions et le lieu d’implantation des pièces. La toute première photographie reproduite dans le livre est un plan rapproché. L’image est coupée. Elle préfigure le travail photographique que l’artiste Peter Downsbrough développera par la suite sur plusieurs décennies.

Les TWO PIPES font partie des collections du Museum of Modern Art de New York, du Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst de Gent, ainsi que de plusieurs collections privées. Ils ont été inclus dans de nombreuses publications et expositions. La Thomas Zander Galerie a récemment organisé l'installation de plusieurs de ces sculptures dans divers lieux de de la ville de Cologne.

After some back and forth between Europe and the USA, Peter Downsbrough (born in 1940, New Brunswick, New Jersey) decided in the late 1980s to live and work in Brussels. Although he initially studied architecture, he quickly immersed himself in the New York artistic scene of the 1960s. Rejecting all gestural expression and renouncing large-scale steel sculpture, he wrote his first NOTES ON LOCATIONS in 1968, composed of lines, arrows, and words. Questioning notions such as place, direction, interval, and temporality, these notes were published in 1973. At the same time, the artist began creating his TWO PIPES, TWO POLES, and TWO LINES. These works, along with the WALL PIECES or ROOM PIECES, would subsequently allow him to both energize and tension the exhibition space or the sheet of paper as well as the urban world through his photographic practice.

Peter Downsbrough (1940, New Brunswick, New Jersey) beslist aan het eind van de jaren 80 om te wonen en te werken in Brussel, na verschillende keren tussen Europa en de Verenigde Staten gereisd te hebben. Hoewel hij oorspronkelijk architectuur studeerde, dompelde hij zich snel onder in de kunstscene van New York in de jaren 60. Hij verwierp elke gebaar en gaf de voorkeur aan kleine sculpturen in staal in plaats van grote. In 1968 schreef hij zijn eerste NOTES ON LOCATIONS, bestaande uit lijnen, pijlen en woorden. Hiermee onderzocht hij begrippen zoals plaats, richting, interval en tijd, die in 1973 werden gepubliceerd. Tegelijkertijd begon de kunstenaar zijn TWO PIPES, TWO POLES en TWO LINES te realiseren, werken die hem later in staat zouden stellen met zijn WALL PIECES en ROOMS PIECES zowel de tentoonstellingsruimte als het stedelijke landschap te dynamiseren en onder spanning te zetten door middel van zijn fotografische praktijk.

Peter Downsbrough (1940, New Brunswick, New Jersey), après quelques allers-retours entre l’Europe et les États-Unis, décide à la fin des années 80 de vivre et travailler à Bruxelles. S’il a d’abord étudié l’architecture, il s’immerge rapidement dans la scène artistique new-yorkaise des années 60. Rejetant toute gestuelle et renonçant à la sculpture en acier de grand format, il rédige en 1968 ses premières NOTES ON LOCATIONS composées de lignes, de flèches et de mots. Interrogeant des notions telles que lieu, direction, intervalle et temporalité, elles seront publiées en 1973. L’artiste commence au même moment à réaliser ses TWO PIPES, TWO POLES et TWO LINES, des œuvres qui lui permettront par la suite avec les WALL PIECES ou ROOMS PIECES autant de dynamiser que de mettre en tension l’espace d’exposition ou de la feuille de papier que celui du monde urbain par le truchement de sa pratique photographie.
